MAY
28 - JUNE 4:
LYNGEN
ALPS
The
Lyngen Alps form a peninsular 60 by 15km to the
east of Tromso and are the finest range in northern
Norway with dozens of peaks over 1400m in altitude.
The
area is a complete wilderness with no huts or major
trekking trails. There are extensive glaciers, steep
snow couloirs and gabbro rock ridges which give
excellent scrambling and rock climbing. In early
June Lyngen is an alpine paradise. Snow cover is
extensive but the ridges are usually bare. With
24 hour daylight and a complete absence of crowds
mountaineering here is a delight. Make no mistake,
the climbs are long and tough and the weather can
be mixed, but the rewards are rich. Our Lyngen
week offers two course levels:-
ARCTIC
MOUNTAINEER: Peak-bagging
and ridges up to alpine PD+ standard (Scottish grade
II with grade 3 scrambling and rock climbing to
VDiff) .Guiding
ratio: 3:1
Price: £1100
ARCTIC
ALPINIST: Longer
mixed routes and ridges from AD standard upwards
(Scottish grade II and III, rock climbing up to
Severe/VS) for more experienced climbers.
Guiding ratio: 2:1 Price £1420
The
courses will meet and depart at Tromso airport.
There is a direct flight from London Gatwick to
Tromso with www.norwegian.no
O/ward: dep: 09.40 arr.14.20 Return: dep 06.30 arr

Midnight
sun over Lofoten from the top of Presten

The
wild and rugged peaks of Lofoten: the eastern pillars

|
JUNE
4-11: LOFOTEN ISLANDS AND STETIND
The
magical Lofoten
Island
chain stretches 150km out into the Norwegian
Sea and features hundreds of dramatic rock
peaks rising from the deep fjords up to 1000m
in altitude. The scrambling and rock climbing
on pristine granite rock is world-famous.
Lofoten climbing divides into 3 broad sectors:-
1) The wild and rugged ranges of Trolltindan
along the Raftsund are some of the roughest
and most delectably beautiful mountains in
the world. Conditions here in early June are
semi-Alpine with extensive snow cover. Many
peaks, like Rulten (1053m) and Trakta (950m),
can only be accessed by boat. 2) The SW corner
of Austvagoya is a mecca for rock climbing
with dozens of superb granite cliffs on the
flanks of 945m Vagakallen includng Presten
3) The western island of Moskenesoya s a wonderful
of miniature mountains rising stright out
of the sea in vast sweeping slabs of granite.
Stetinden
and the Narvik ranges: The nearby
mainland ranges offer further potential for
mountaineering with pride of place going to
the magnificent 1392m Stetinden www.stetind.nu
, which can be an additonal objective on the
Lofoten week. Road access is excellent throughout
Lofoten with amazing systems of tunnels, causeways
and bridges. Although distances can be long
driving times are surprisingly quick.
Our
Lofoten weeks offer two course levels:-
ARCTIC
SUMMITS: Climb
spectacular rock peaks and ridge scrambles on Lofoten
and Stetinden; scrambling grades 3 and
4 with rock sections to VDiff/Severe and snow climbing
to Scottish grade II standard. Guiding
ratio: 3:1
Price: £1100
ARCTIC
CLIMBER: Long
and adventurous rock routes to the summits of some
of Norway's finest summits, including N Ridge
of Vagakallen (IV+), Rulten E Ridge (IV),
Presten West Pillar (VI), Svolvaer Goat (V)

South Pillar (V+);
itinerary designed for climbers with regular experience
at VSevere (4c) standard or above.

to fly internally in Norway to Bodo and take the
ferry from there to Svolvaer.

ROMSDAL:
JUNE 11-18
Romsdal
is one of Norway's finest mountain areas,
home of the 5,000 foot Troll Wall, Europe's highest
rock face, and stunning rock peaks such as the Romsdalshorn
(1555m), Store Vengetind (1843m), Store Trolltind (1795m),
Bispen (1475m) (the Bishop), and Kongen (1593m) (the
King). The town of Andalsnes is a noted mountain centre
and an excellent base for exploration of these peaks. The
area is reached by a long but simple drive north from Oslo
airport on the main E6 highway; 5 hours. There are direct
flights to Oslo from many British airports including Heathrow,
Edinburgh and Manchester. This enables the journey to Andalsnes
to be completed in a day, and we provide airport transfers
for arrival and departure. The course will be camp based with
option to use self-catering cabins in event of bad weather.
In June the mountains still carry large snowfields so the
climbing will be semi-Alpine in character, adding to the atmosphere
and quality of the ascents.
