LITTLE KAILASH EXPLORER
September 19th - October 14th 2002
This trip will be the first Western expedition to enter and explore the remote mountains of Eastern Kumaon for some 50 years. Our team will trek the magnificent valleys close to the Nepalese and Tibetan border, home of the Bhotia people, cross two high passes over 5000 metres altitude, and spend a week reconnoitring and climbing on the mountains of the Little Kailash range. The pilgrim route from India to Mount Kailash in Tibet passes along the Kali Ganga valley through the area. Little Kailash itself is a 6320m peak bearing an uncanny similarity to the sacred Mount Kailash 100 miles to the north; there is a plentiful supply of other unclimbed mountains in the altitude range 5500-6300m in the area. The trip will be lightweight in style, allowing the party maximum freedom of movement. We recommend the expedition to all fit mountaineers and adventurous trekkers who have previous experience on snow and ice terrain and who seek a pioneering challenge.
OUTLINE ITINERARY
Thurs/Fri Sept 19th-20th: Overnight flight to Delhi; sightseeing in Delhi and final packing
Sat Sept 21st: Night train to Kathgodam; bus journey to the hill resort of Kausani
Sun Sept 22nd: Bus journey through Kumaon foothills town of Darchula; obtain Restricted Area Permits; final shopping; stay at resthouse
Mon Sept 23rd: Bus to roadhead at Tawaghat at confluence of Kali Ganga and Darma River and trek to Nue (1800m)
Tues Sept 24th-Thurs Sept 26th: 60km trek up Darma valley to base camp site at Bidang (3600m)
Fri Sept 27th-Sun Sept 29th: Reconnoitre of peaks and passes on east side of Darma valley
Mon Sept 30th-Thurs Oct 3rd: Explorations and ascents in Little Kailash range including Little Kailash (6320m) and Yungtangto (5940m)
Fri Oct 4th-Sun Oct 6th: Make lightweight trek across the Shin La pass (5500m) to Jolingkong lake (4630m) in Kuthi Yankti valley
Mon Oct 7th-Fri Oct 11th: 70km Trek from Jolingkong back to Tawaghat following the pilgrim route down Kali Ganga valley
Sat Oct 12th-Sun Oct 13th: Bus journey to Kathgodam; night train to Delhi
Mon Oct 14th: Flights home to Britain
